MOUs Signed for Advanced Cable Materials

During the international wire and cable exhibition Wire China 2026 in Shanghai, Hanwha Solutions Wire & Cable Division formalized two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on September 22. The agreements with Zhongtian Technology Submarine Cable (ZTT) and Hengtong focus on joint development of high-voltage cable insulation and semiconductive materials for offshore wind, subsea and HVDC applications.

Exhibition Context

Hanwha Solutions announced its participation on September 21, stating that it would exhibit at Wire China 2026, which ran from September 21 to 24. The Shanghai-based show convenes global cable manufacturers, material suppliers and equipment firms to showcase the latest technologies and explore partnership opportunities. Hanwha’s booth highlighted extra-high-voltage (EHV) cable solutions, including a 500 kV-class Super Extra-High Voltage (SEHV) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) model and a circular-economy “Closed Loop” XLPE recycling concept.

Technical Scope and Data

  • 132 kV wet-type offshore-wind TR-XLPE – joint development with ZTT, targeting long-term insulation reliability in moisture-exposed environments.
  • SEHV, subsea and HVDC XLPE – collaborative work with Hengtong on XLPE insulation and semiconductive shielding for 500 kV-class cables.
  • Material contributions – Hanwha Solutions will supply 132 kV-class tree-retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE) and semiconductive materials; ZTT will manufacture sample cables for performance verification.
  • Circular XLPE – Hanwha demonstrated a recycled-XLPE cable model that reprocesses waste cable material into new insulation, underscoring a circular-economy approach.

Future Collaboration Outlook

The MOUs set the foundation for ongoing joint research, prototype testing and potential commercial rollout of the specified cable materials. Both Hanwha Solutions and its Chinese partners have indicated plans to leverage their combined production capabilities to meet the expanding demand for high-voltage transmission infrastructure and offshore wind projects in China and abroad. No specific timelines for product launch were disclosed.
