OpenAI Begins Testing Visual Ads Within ChatGPT’s Image Generation

Visual-Ad Rollout in the United States
OpenAI announced that, later this month, it will start testing image-based advertisements that appear alongside the results of ChatGPT’s image-generation feature. The ads will be displayed only to users on the free tier in the U.S., will be clearly labeled, and will remain separate from the AI-generated images. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise plans will not see these ads.
Evolution of the ChatGPT Ad Program
OpenAI first introduced text-only ads in February, showing a sponsor’s name, logo, headline, description, landing-page link, and a static image beneath the chat window. In August, the company expanded its ad offering to India. The new visual format is intended to let advertisers illustrate products or services more vividly, complementing the existing text ads. OpenAI also disclosed that it is broadening its measurement ecosystem, adding partners such as Kochava, AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, and ten others, as well as full-funnel analytics firms like Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. Pilot work with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science aims to develop brand-suitability safeguards without granting those firms access to user conversations.
Advertiser Criticism
Since the February launch, advertisers have repeatedly voiced three main frustrations: (1) limited ability to measure campaign performance, (2) a narrow set of ad formats, and insufficient inventory to absorb desired spend. These concerns have been cited as barriers to larger budget allocations and have prompted OpenAI’s recent updates to ad formats and measurement tools.
Official Statements & Safeguards
The company also noted that the initial test will involve a limited group of advertisers, with plans to explore additional formats and geo-based incrementality experiments in partnership with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic.
