Core Incident
Himashree Boro, a 20-year-old tribal student of B Borooah College, Guwahati, was found dead beside the railway tracks in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. She had boarded the Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express (Train No. 22503) at Visakhapatnam after a dance competition and was travelling alone toward Guwahati. Her body was recovered from a forested area near Malayapuram between the Ponduru and Dusi sections.
Background & Context
Boro travelled to Visakhapatnam on September 30 with a dance troupe for a competition and planned to return home before a bank examination on October 10. After missing a reserved berth, she boarded the train around midnight on October 5 with a general ticket for the S-2 coach. A local acquaintance, Avinash, accompanied her to the station.
During the journey, Boro sent a video of the crowded coach to friends and called a friend at 2:39 am on October 6, reporting that “some boys were troubling her.” The call was abruptly disconnected and her phone was switched off. Her family last spoke to her at around 1:30 pm on October 6.
Investigation Findings
Railway police located Boro’s belongings inside the S-2 coach but could not trace her on the train. Searches along the route led to the discovery of her body. Authorities are examining the scene, injuries, witness statements, CCTV footage from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, and her communications prior to disappearance.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector in Visakhapatnam said investigators are checking whether she was pushed or fell accidentally due to crowding. A post-mortem and further forensic analysis are pending to determine the cause of death.
Official Statements & Responses
- The Railway Protection Force (RPF) reported that an assistant sub-inspector and personnel responded to a complaint on the Rail Madad portal about alleged misbehaviour with a woman passenger on October 6, searched the coaches at Srikakulam Road station, and recorded statements from passengers and the acquaintance who dropped Boro at the station.
- Dimoria MLA Tapan Das announced that the state government will facilitate the return of the body, arranging a flight since there are no direct flights to Guwahati, and that an autopsy will be conducted in Srikakulam.
Criticism & Opposition
Boro’s family and sister-in-law allege negligence by the RPF, claiming that after reporting her discomfort and the presence of inebriated men in the coach, they received no confirmation of her safety. They demanded a thorough investigation, accusing the RPF of failing to act on the distress call.
Conflicting Reports & Gaps
- The cause of death remains undetermined; officials suggest a possible accidental fall, while the family suspects foul play involving drunken men on the train.
- CCTV footage confirms Boro boarded the train and was in the coach, but it does not clarify how she left the train.
- No definitive identification of the “unidentified man” seen with her on the Visakhapatnam platform has been made.
What’s Next
The post-mortem is scheduled at RIMS Hospital in Srikakulam. After the autopsy, the body will be flown to Guwahati and the family will be notified. Police continue to collect statements, review CCTV, and investigate whether external interference or an accidental fall caused her death.
