Accidental Blast Injures Four CRPF Personnel in Sukma, Chhattisgarh

By Drooid · · How we work

Incident Overview

On Thursday evening, an accidental explosion occurred while a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Ammunition Technical Team (ATT) was disposing of unserviceable and leftover explosives near the Elarmadgu security camp in Sukma district, Bastar division, Chhattisgarh. A fragment of an explosive device flew from the disposal site, landed nearby, and detonated, injuring four personnel deployed for the operation.

Operational Context

Sukma district has been a focal point of anti-Maoist operations for years. The region was officially declared “Maoist-free” on March 31, after a series of security successes. Since that declaration, incidents involving injuries to security forces from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have become relatively rare, making the Thursday blast notable in the post-Maoist security landscape.

Personnel Involved

  • Assistant Sub-Inspector M K Tiwari – ATT, 50th battalion (seriously injured)
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector Anees Khan – 50th battalion (seriously injured)
  • Inspector Amarnath Mishra – ATT, 50th battalion (minor injuries)
  • Head Constable Kuldeep Raj – 50th battalion (minor injuries)

The ATT had arrived from Jagdalpur to inspect camps across the Konta range and safely dispose of the identified explosives.

Casualties and Medical Response

Four CRPF personnel were injured; two ASIs sustained serious injuries while the inspector and head constable suffered relatively minor wounds. All four received immediate first aid at the blast site and were transported to the government hospital in Konta for treatment. Police officials indicated that arrangements were being made to transfer the two seriously injured personnel to a higher-level medical facility for advanced care if required.

Official Response

Police statements described the incident as an accident that occurred despite the team following prescribed safety protocols. The official report emphasized that the blast was not the result of a Maoist-triggered IED attack. The Sukma Superintendent of Police, Mayank Gurjar, confirmed that the situation was under control and that an inquiry into the disposal procedure would be launched.

On-the-Ground Reports

Local police clarified that initial media speculation suggested an IED detonation during an area search, but subsequent verification identified the cause as an accidental explosion during the controlled disposal of stored explosives. The blast took place approximately 200 metres from the Elarmadgu camp, near the Bodrajpadar Nala, according to the police briefing.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

Early reports from some outlets described the event as an IED explosion, implying possible insurgent involvement. Later police communications corrected this narrative, attributing the blast to an accidental detonation during the disposal operation. No further details have been released regarding the specific type of explosive fragment that caused the blast, and the pending inquiry is expected to address procedural gaps in the disposal process.
