Apple Gains Market Share Despite Mac Shipment Drop in Q3 2026

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Event: Mac Shipments Fall While Share Rises

In the third quarter of 2026, Apple shipped an estimated 5.9 million Macs, an 11.3 % decline from the same period a year earlier. Despite the volume drop, Apple’s share of the global PC market rose to 9.5 % from 8.5 % in Q3 2025, keeping the company in fourth place among vendors, according to IDC’s preliminary estimates.

Market Landscape: Overall PC Decline

IDC reported that total PC shipments fell to 62.7 million units, a 20.1 % reduction from the prior year’s 78.5 million. The decline was broader than Apple’s, with the top three vendors—Lenovo (14.9 million units, -22.6 %), HP (10.3 million units, -30.9 %), and Dell (7.6 million units, -25 %)—all posting steeper percentage drops. ASUS, the only other top-five brand with a smaller decline (-8.6 %), shipped 5.5 million units.

Pricing and Supply Factors

Apple increased Mac prices in June, a move Tim Cook attributed to sharply rising memory expenses during Apple’s July earnings call. IDC linked the weaker quarter to earlier-than-usual ordering by manufacturers and distributors, who stocked up to hedge against rising memory costs and component shortages. The firm noted that sellers retained inventory, reducing the need for additional orders later in the quarter. IDC also cited the expansion of AI data-center demand as a pressure on memory supplies and pricing.

Outlook: Economic Headwinds

IDC warned that a weakening economy could further depress PC demand through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, suggesting that price levels are unlikely to return to pre-2025 levels. The firm indicated that while Apple’s market-share gain reflects relative resilience, the broader market contraction may limit growth opportunities for all vendors.
