History

Historical Context

The 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, which claimed 35 lives, triggered sweeping national gun reforms and reshaped law-enforcement protocols across Australia. Prime Minister John Howard introduced the National Firearms Agreement, limiting semi-automatic rifles and mandating a 5-year buy-back costing A$1 billion to reduce firearm availability. Today, New South Wales Police deployed over 50 officers, the riot squad, and a helicopter to Dulwich Hill, echoing the massive mobilization after Port Arthur. The legacy of the 1996 reforms pressures authorities to balance rapid response with stricter weapon controls, influencing future policy debates.
