Shotgun Threat Triggers Major Police Search in Sydney’s Dulwich Hill

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Incident

In the inner-west suburb of Dulwich Hill, a man in his 20s brandished a sawn-off shotgun at a couple who confronted him over a stolen van. After the confrontation, the suspect set the van ablaze and fled on foot. Police were called to the scene at about 10:20 a.m. on a Friday, and a large-scale lockdown and search operation was launched. The man, described as a Caucasian individual about 160 cm tall, thin-built with shaggy brown hair, remains at large.

Police Response

Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald directed a three-hour exclusion zone around Williams Parade and Constitution Road. The operation deployed more than 50 officers, including the riot squad, officers in bullet-proof vests, police dogs, a PolAir helicopter and a police helicopter. Light-rail services between Dulwich Hill and Lilyfield were suspended during the search and later resumed. Several businesses, cafés and two primary schools—Dulwich Hill Public School and Summer Hill Public School—were placed into lockdown, while nearby Canterbury Girls High School, which was holding HSC exams, entered lockout mode. No injuries or arrests were reported.

Official Statements & Responses

Superintendent Fitzgerald told reporters that no shots were fired and urged anyone who sees the suspect to call Triple Zero and not approach him. She also asked the public to share any mobile-phone or dash-cam footage that might aid the investigation. Deputy Premier Prue Car described the incident as frightening for residents but praised police efforts, stating that the government is providing all necessary resources to resolve the case.

On-the-Ground Reports

Witnesses said the couple boxed the stolen van in a car park on Williams Parade and Constitution Road before the man produced the shotgun. One resident heard a loud bang captured on a baby monitor and described smoke pouring from the burning van. Another neighbor on a balcony reported the suspect pointing the weapon and the couple sprinting away. Residents were instructed to stay indoors, and many were escorted to their homes by police. Schools later announced that students could be released as normal after the lockdown was lifted.
