History

Historical Context

The 2018 Brazilian presidential election, won by Jair Bolsonaro in October 2018, marked a dramatic right-wing shift after decades of leftist rule. That contest delivered Bolsonaro 46% of votes versus Fernando Haddad’s 29%, as reported by the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral, sparking nationwide protests and violence. Today, Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro face off on Band TV, with a BTG/Nexus poll showing Bolsonaro at 52% and Lula at 48%. Parallel investigations by Brazil’s Supreme Court into money-laundering and Amazon’s 41.8% deforestation drop since 1988 underscore stakes for democracy and climate policy.
