History

Historical Context

On March 25 1911 a blaze in New York’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory killed 146 immigrant workers, prompting the New York State Factory Investigating Commission to draft 38 safety laws and inspire the modern labor movement. Today Mumbai’s densely packed scrap-godowns in Saki Naka and Kurla, overseen by the city fire department, Adani Electricity and police, echo that century-old tragedy, renewing calls for stricter fire codes.
