Rapid Adoption Milestone
According to market-intelligence provider Sensor Tower, Meta’s AI companion Muse logged 10.9 million total downloads since its September debut, with 10.2 million of those coming from the United States. Sensor Tower’s senior insights analyst Kara Lee notes that only eleven other apps have ever achieved a comparable post-launch download volume within the first 40 days. The most recent entrant to that exclusive group was Meta’s own Threads in July 2023; the remaining apps are largely mobile games such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Pokémon GO, with Disney+ the only other non-game app to join the club.
Marketing Power and Brand Reach
Meta leveraged its ecosystem of 3.6 billion daily active users to promote Muse across Facebook, Instagram, and other services. Sensor Tower data show that Meta allocated 39 % of its total advertising spend to Muse in October, up from 23 % the prior month. This boost propelled Muse to the 21st-largest U.S. brand by advertising impressions in October, a jump from 73rd in September.
User Retention and Activity
Muse’s early-stage retention outperformed its AI rivals. In the United States, the app retained 30 % of users after seven days and 23 % after fourteen days, whereas competitors such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok averaged 19 % and 16 % respectively over the same periods, per Sensor Tower. Daily active users hit 2.5 million on October 16, marking a 15 % week-over-week increase.
App-Store Performance
Muse held the No. 1 position on the U.S. App Store for every day of its launch window except October 19, when streaming service Kick briefly displaced it; the app reclaimed the top spot by the following Tuesday. It has also maintained the No. 1 rank on Google Play for the past 30 days.
Competitive Landscape and Outlook
In its first 40 days, Muse surpassed ChatGPT’s 3.7 million U.S. downloads, though the latter’s global total of roughly 15 million exceeds Muse’s, reflecting ChatGPT’s broader availability in markets such as Japan, Brazil, and Germany. Muse remains limited to the United States and Canada, a factor that tempers direct global comparisons. The strong download and retention figures suggest Meta’s integrated marketing approach and sizable user base are giving its AI companion a competitive edge in a crowded market, while future expansion beyond North America will determine whether the early momentum can be sustained.
