In 1979 the NFL and MLB shared a prime-time broadcast, the first under the four-year contracts that placed Monday Night Football on ABC, the NFC package on CBS and the AFC package on NBC. That year ESPN launched as the first 24-hour sports channel and the NFL completed its 60th regular season with Super Bowl XIV, sparking the era of higher rights fees and cross-league scheduling.
