Historical Context
- U.S. discussions with Poland on missile defense began in 2002 and led to the 2008 agreement to host interceptors, a move Russia condemned as a new Cold War threat. After the 2009 cancellation of the European Interceptor Site, NATO deployed an Aegis Ashore battery in Poland in 2024, housing 24 SM-3 missiles, now complemented by a $4.75 billion Patriot PAC-3 hub, strengthening the alliance’s eastern shield.
