History

Rooted in Yevgeny Primakov’s 1998 call for a multipolar bloc and Jim O’Neill’s 2001 “BRIC” label, the four economies formalised cooperation in 2006 and held their first summit in Yekaterinburg in June 2009, launching the New Development Bank with $50 billion capital. South Africa’s 2010 entry created BRICS, and the 2021 $100 billion reserve arrangement underpins today’s 12th Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi, where Om Birla passed the chair to China.
