History

On 25 June 1975 President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s advice, invoked Article 352 and suspended civil liberties for 21 months, imprisoning over 100,000 opponents and banning rallies. The Emergency’s crackdown on dissent set a precedent for police-enforced restrictions on public assemblies. Today, Delhi Police’s denial of venue access for the INDIA bloc rally revives those authoritarian tactics, prompting legal and civil-society challenges.
