Historical Context
  • The May 1968 protests in France, ignited by student occupations at the University of Paris and strikes, forced President Charles de Gaulle to call an election. Over 10 million workers joined the movement, and the General Confederation of Labour reported a 22-day general strike that halted 70 percent of French industry. Today's unrest echoes those protests, as Kenya’s University of Nairobi students, Serbia’s Student List, and Italy’s Movimento 17 ottobre mobilize crowds and trigger police actions. Governments consequently tighten security, allocate additional forces—Italy added 1,500 officers—and negotiate labor deals, fearing economic disruption akin to the 1968 shutdown.
