In March-April 2002, Israel launched Operation Defensive Shield, its largest West Bank offensive since the 1967 war, to curb the Second Intifada’s surge of suicide bombings. The six-week campaign razed roughly 1,000 Palestinian homes, arrested 2,500 people and seized more than 300 weapons, prompting UN and human-rights criticism that the tactics deepened the conflict.
