History

The Theni district jailbreak echoes a long-standing pattern of escapes from Delhi’s Tihar Prison, which after its 1966 transfer to the National Capital Territory expanded in 1984 to become India’s largest jail. High-profile breakouts such as Charles Sobhraj’s 1986 flight and the 2015 tunnel escape occurred amid chronic overcrowding – 14,059 inmates housed in a 5,200-person facility as of Dec 2023, double the 2018 level.
