History

In 1988 Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the Shatabdi Express, India's first train built for speeds up to 130 km/h. The Make-in-India Vande Bharat EMU, launched in 2019 and expanded to sleeper sets in January 2026, continues that high-speed push. Today Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath opened a 760-km Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Sleeper, targeting a 9.2-hour run.
