Summary

Peter Berg released the war-sports film “The Mosquito Bowl”, opening Friday, Oct. 30 and streaming on Netflix Nov. 25.
The film dramatizes a Christmas Eve 1944 football game played by U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal.
Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Tom Francis and Ray Nicholson portray the real college stars turned Marines.
The real Mosquito Bowl ended scoreless.
Fifteen of its 65 players later died at Okinawa.

History

In December 1914 British and German soldiers on the Western Front left the trenches, sang carols and played football—a fact noted in letters but later questioned by historians. A comparable Christmas-Eve football game among U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal in 1944 is dramatized in the 2024 film “The Mosquito Bowl,” showing sport’s recurring role in troop morale.
