On 18 July 1994 a van bomb exploded at Buenos Aires’ AMIA Jewish centre, killing 85 and wounding over 300, the deadliest attack in Argentina. Prosecutors Alberto Nisman and Marcelo Martínez Burgos blamed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah in 2006; a 2024 court confirmed Iran directed the bombing. The case heightened Argentine-Iran tensions and drew a petition for justice from Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
