History

In 1999 Sir Alex Ferguson kept injured Roy Keane as captain and United still clinched the Premier League title, the second of four league crowns Keane won while captain. The club now repeats the pattern, with former vice-captain Michael Carrick retaining Bruno Fernandes as captain as United struggle near the relegation zone. Both cases show United’s long-standing reliance on captaincy stability amid squad challenges.
