History

After colonial neglect left rural India impoverished, successive schemes from the 1960s culminated in the 1993 Employment Assurance Scheme. In 2001 the scheme merged into Sampoorna Gramin Rojgar Yojana, a direct precursor to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act enacted on 23 August 2005, which guarantees at least 100 days of wage work per rural household through Gram Panchayats.
