  • In 1991, the Indian government launched the National Agricultural Debt Waiver, relieving INR2.5 billion of farmer loans across Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s administration approved the waiver for 1.2 million borrowers, covering up to INR75,000 per farm household. Today's Tamil Nadu government, under Chief Minister C. Vijay, mirrors that approach with five-year job age-relaxation, INR1 lakh farm-loan waivers, and 717 TASMAC shop closures. The pattern reinforces the state's dependence on expansive subsidies to mitigate unemployment and agrarian distress, while raising concerns about fiscal sustainability and long-term economic resilience.
