History

The 1962 Spiegel affair began when Interior Minister Franz Josef Strauss ordered police raids on Der Spiegel, arresting about fifty journalists including founder Rudolf Augstein. After the occupation ended on 26 November, Augstein stayed detained until 7 February 1963. A 1965 court ruling condemned Strauss’s overreach, and the 1966 Constitutional Court decision cemented press-freedom protections still debated today.
