History

After a 2008 study sparked negotiations in 2009, Canada and the EU signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement on 30 October 2016; provisional application began 21 September 2017, eliminating 98 % of tariffs. The Alliance for the Future, led by Mark Carney and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, proposes expanding CETA to digital services and competition policy to double EU-Canada trade.
