India will conduct its 2027 national population census from 25 January to 28 February, with a revisional round 1–5 March.
The enumeration period is now nearly six weeks and includes 40 questions, up from 29 in 2011.
The government allocated Rs 11,718.24 crore and will use digital tools for the census.
Phase-2 will collect comprehensive caste data and personal identifiers such as mobile number, Aadhaar, voter ID and passport number.

History

The British Raj launched its first all-India census in 1872, modeled on Britain’s decennial surveys and overseen by the Registrar General. After independence, the permanent Registrar General’s office kept the ten-year rhythm, most recently the 2027 census conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs with a INR11,718.24 crore budget and Aadhaar linkage.
