- On 25 June 1975 President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, on Indira Gandhi’s advice, declared a national Emergency that suspended civil liberties and led to the detention of more than 100,000 opponents. The period ended on 21 March 1977, after which Congress lost power. Today, Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka chief minister D K Shivakumar and Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy cite Gandhi’s 20-point programme at a Shakti Sthal ceremony, showing the Emergency’s lasting political resonance.
