During the 1987-88 Operation Earnest Will, Iran mined the U.S. frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April 1988. In retaliation, President Ronald Reagan ordered Operation Praying Mantis on 18 April 1988, sinking six Iranian warships and a tanker and pressuring Iran toward a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War. Trump’s proposed “Epic Fury” echo this limited-scale naval showdown.
