- In July 2000 Mullah Mohammed Omar ordered the Taliban to ban poppy farming, slashing Afghanistan’s opium output by about 99% and cutting illicit earnings by roughly $1 billion. After the regime’s fall in 2001, cultivation rebounded and by 2026 UNODC records 43,000 hectares in 16 provinces, echoing the pre-ban expansion and underscoring the country’s persistent reliance on the drug economy.
