- In 1997 NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory landed Mars Pathfinder in Ares Vallis, deploying the Sojourner rover and proving autonomous navigation at a cost of about $150 million. The mission’s low-cost, airbag-landing and obstacle-avoidance concepts became the template for later rovers, enabling Perseverance’s 2021 precision positioning using the same Mars localization principles today.
