On December 12 2000 the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Bush v. Gore stopped Florida’s recount, awarding George W. Bush the state’s 25 electoral votes by a 537-vote margin. Today the Department of Justice’s attorney John Rogers seeks an injunction to block Alaska’s Senate certification of Dan Sullivan, invoking the precedent set in 2000, as a model for federal oversight of state contests.
